Announcing PETSAppeal Animal Breeding Software: The Complete Solution for Professional Breeders

Today marks a milestone for responsible breeders everywhere. We're proud to announce the launch of PETSAppeal's most comprehensive module yet: Professional Animal Breeding Management Software. This powerful addition brings the same level of sophistication our users love across grooming, boarding, daycare, and veterinary services to the breeding community.

Why Professional Breeders Need Professional Software

Responsible breeding is complex, demanding work. From tracking heat cycles and managing genetic testing to documenting whelping details and matching puppies with qualified buyers, the administrative burden can overwhelm even the most organized breeder. Generic spreadsheets and note-taking apps simply aren't designed for the intricate relationships between breeding animals, health clearances, pedigrees, and buyer communications.

We spent months working with professional breeders—those who health test, show their dogs, carefully select breeding pairs, and stand behind every animal they produce. We learned about their challenges, their record-keeping nightmares, and their vision for how technology could support ethical breeding practices. The result is a comprehensive breeding management system that handles everything from heat cycle prediction to five-generation pedigree generation.

The Complete Breeding Management Ecosystem

1. Intelligent Heat Cycle Tracking & Prediction

Timing is everything in breeding. Our AI-powered heat cycle management system takes the guesswork out of breeding windows with 92% accurate cycle predictions based on your female's historical patterns.

What makes our heat cycle tracking special:

  • Progesterone level tracking: Log multiple test readings throughout the cycle to pinpoint optimal breeding windows
  • Optimal window calculation: System automatically identifies the best breeding days based on progesterone levels and cycle phase
  • Next cycle prediction: Using historical data, the system forecasts when the next heat will occur (default 180-day intervals, customizable per dog)
  • Automated alerts: Get notified 7 days before predicted heats so you're never caught unprepared
  • Phase tracking: Document physical and behavioral signs through proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus phases
  • Cycle history: Complete record of every heat cycle with notes, test results, and breeding outcomes

For breeders managing multiple females, the dashboard provides an at-a-glance view of which girls are in heat, who's approaching a cycle, and upcoming breeding windows—eliminating the chaos of calendar management and reminder notes.

2. Comprehensive Breeding Event Management

From the moment you breed to the day puppies go home, every detail matters. Our breeding event system guides you through the complete breeding lifecycle with structured data capture and automated calculations.

Pre-Breeding & Breeding Documentation:

  • Sire and dam selection: Link to your breeding program animals with full health and genetic test visibility

  • Financial tracking: Capture breeding costs (stud fees, AI, shipping) and veterinary expenses

Pregnancy Management:

  • Confirmation tracking: Record confirmation method (ultrasound, palpation, bloodwork), date confirmed, and expected litter size
  • Automated whelping date: System calculates expected due date using 63-day gestation from breeding date
  • Status workflow: Pregnancy confirmed → Whelping imminent → Whelped → Completed
  • Pregnancy notes: Document dam's health, appetite changes, nesting behavior, and veterinary observations
  • Overdue alerts: System flags pregnancies past due date for veterinary attention

Whelping Documentation:

  • Detailed whelping records: Start time, end time, whelping type (natural, assisted, emergency c-section)
  • Birth statistics: Total born, live births, stillbirths, surviving count
  • Veterinary intervention: Flag if assistance was required and document complications
  • Dam postpartum condition: Track recovery and any health issues
  • Whelping notes: Comprehensive narrative of the entire event

This structured approach ensures you have complete documentation for registration paperwork, health guarantees, and breed club requirements—plus invaluable data for future breeding decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a professional breeder to use this software?

PETSAppeal is designed for ethical, responsible breeders who health test, carefully plan breedings, and stand behind their animals. Whether you produce 1-2 litters per year as a hobby breeder or run a larger breeding operation, the software scales to your needs. However, this isn't software for casual breeders—it's built for those who take breeding seriously and want comprehensive record-keeping.

Can I import my existing breeding records, or do I start from scratch?

You can import your breeding animals via spreadsheet, including basic pedigree information. However, detailed historical data (past litters, offspring records, genetic tests, competition results) typically needs to be entered manually. Most breeders start by importing their current breeding dogs and then add historical records gradually as time permits. You can also choose to start fresh and only track going forward.

How does the heat cycle prediction work? How accurate is it?

The system analyzes your female's historical heat cycle data to predict when the next heat will occur. It looks at the intervals between past cycles and calculates an average. For most dogs, cycles occur every 180 days, but the system learns your individual dog's pattern. Accuracy improves with more historical data—breeders report 92% accuracy after tracking 3-4 cycles. The system sends alerts 7 days before predicted heats.

What is COI and why does it matter?

COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) measures how closely related the parents of a litter are. It's expressed as a percentage—0% means no common ancestors in the pedigree, while higher percentages indicate linebreeding or inbreeding. Most breed experts recommend keeping COI under 5-6% to maintain genetic diversity and reduce the risk of genetic diseases. Our system automatically calculates COI when you build pedigrees and provides warning levels (low, moderate, high) to help you make informed breeding decisions.

Can I share pedigrees with puppy buyers?

Yes! The system generates professional, AKC-compliant pedigree PDFs that you can download and share. You control which pedigrees are public (visible on your breeding program's profile) versus private. You can also choose whether to display health clearances, titles, and colors on the pedigrees. Buyers appreciate seeing complete five-generation pedigrees with champion ancestors highlighted.

How does genetic testing tracking work? Do you integrate with testing labs?

The system tracks the complete lifecycle of each genetic test—from ordering the kit to receiving results. You manually enter test results (we don't have direct API integration with labs yet), but once entered, the system evaluates results and provides breeding recommendations. For example, if a dog tests as a carrier for a recessive disease, the system recommends "Breed to clear only." You can upload test certificates, link to OFA results, and display clearances on public profiles.

Can I track breeding animals that I co-own with someone else?

Yes, through our multi-user permissions system. You can grant co-owners access to specific animals or your entire breeding program. Co-owners can view records, add notes, and track heat cycles. You control what level of access each user has. This is perfect for co-ownership arrangements or mentorship situations where an experienced breeder wants to guide a newcomer.

What if I breed multiple species (dogs and cats, for example)?

The system supports any species. All the features—heat cycles, breeding events, litters, pedigrees, genetic testing, etc.—work identically regardless of species. You can manage dog breeding and cat breeding in the same account. The only species-specific difference is gestation length, which you can customize per breeding event if needed (default is 63 days for dogs, 65 days for cats).

How do I track individual puppies in a litter? What if they don't have names yet?

Each offspring record includes temporary identification fields—collar color, birth order, distinctive markings. Many breeders use colored puppy collars (red boy, blue girl, etc.) until permanent names are assigned. You can take photos of each puppy with their collar and update their temporary name as they develop personalities. Once you assign permanent names or buyers name them, you simply update the record.

Can I track puppies after they go to their new homes?

Yes! You can maintain lifetime records for offspring even after placement. Many breeders track adult weights, titles earned, health issues, and breeding (if breeding rights were granted). This information is invaluable for evaluating your breeding program's success and making future breeding decisions. Buyers appreciate breeders who stay involved long-term.

How does the waiting list work? Can buyers add themselves?

Currently, waiting list entries are added by you (the breeder) when someone inquires. You capture their contact info, preferences (sex, color, temperament, purpose), and move them through qualification steps (application, references, home check). The system helps you match puppies with buyers based on preferences and assigns priority scores based on qualification level, deposit status, and time on list. Self-service buyer signup is on our roadmap.

What happens when multiple people want the same puppy?

The waiting list system tracks everyone interested in your program. When you have a litter, you match specific puppies with qualified buyers based on their preferences and your assessment of best fit. If multiple people would be suitable for the same puppy, your position management and priority scoring help you make fair decisions. The system doesn't automatically assign puppies—you maintain full control.

Can I generate contracts and puppy packets from the system?

Contract generation and document templates are on our roadmap. Currently, you can upload your contracts (PDF or Word) and link them to offspring records or waiting list entries. When you sell a puppy, you can attach the signed contract to their record. Many breeders use the system's data export to populate contract templates outside the system, then upload the completed contracts back.

How do I track expenses and income for tax purposes?

Each breeding event tracks breeding costs and veterinary expenses. Each litter tracks total expenses and revenue with automatic profit/loss calculation. Individual offspring track sale prices and deposits. You can export financial data for your accountant. However, PETSAppeal doesn't replace accounting software—it provides breeding-specific financial tracking that feeds into your overall business accounting.

Can I create a public website or profile showing my breeding program?

Public profiles are in development. Currently, the system is primarily for your internal record-keeping and buyer communication. However, you can export pedigree PDFs, competition records, and health clearances to display on your existing website. Future releases will include public breeder profiles where potential buyers can browse your dogs, see health clearances, and submit inquiries.

What if a breeding doesn't result in pregnancy?

Mark the breeding event as "pregnancy failed" after confirmation methods (ultrasound, palpation, bloodwork) indicate no pregnancy. The system preserves the complete record—breeding dates, progesterone levels, methods used—so you have data for future attempts. If you offer a return breeding for stud service, you can link the original booking to a new breeding event.

How do I schedule and track return breedings or live puppy guarantees?

The stud service booking system includes flags for "live puppy guarantee" and "return service available." If a breeding produces no live puppies, you can create a new booking linked to the original service and mark the stud fee as already paid. The system doesn't automatically schedule return breedings—you manage timing based on the female's cycle and your availability.

Can I track progesterone testing across multiple heat cycles to identify patterns?

Yes! Each heat cycle can have multiple progesterone readings with dates and levels. Over time, you'll build a progesterone pattern for each female showing when she typically ovulates relative to cycle day. This helps you time future breedings more precisely. The system displays all progesterone data visually so you can see trends.

What competition types are supported? Do you integrate with AKC or UKC results?

The system supports conformation, obedience, rally, agility, barn hunt, dock diving, nosework, herding, lure coursing, and any other performance sport. You manually enter results after shows. We don't currently have direct integration with AKC or UKC result databases, but you can link to official results online. You track placements, points earned, qualifying scores, and title progression manually.

Can I track titles in progress? Like how many championship points I need?

Yes! Each competition record can track points earned, and you can set title requirements to monitor progress. For example, you might note "3 of 15 points toward Championship" or "2 of 3 legs toward CD title." The system doesn't automatically calculate title requirements (which vary by organization and breed), but you can manually track progress and mark when titles are earned.

How do I handle breeding animals that I sell or retire?

Change the animal's breeding status from "active" to "retired" or "sold with breeding rights." Retired animals remain in your database with their complete history—litters produced, offspring placed, titles earned. If you sell with breeding rights, you can track offspring they produce in other programs. If you sell without rights, you typically remove them from your active roster but keep historical records.

What if I discover health issues in offspring after placement? How do I track that?

You can update offspring health records even after placement. Add health issues to their record with diagnosis date and details. This information is crucial for evaluating your breeding program—if multiple offspring from a breeding develop similar issues, that's important data for future breeding decisions. Many breeders maintain lifelong communication with buyers specifically to track health outcomes.

Can I share this software with my veterinarian?

You can grant view-only access to your veterinarian if needed. They could review breeding animal health records, see genetic testing results, and view pregnancy documentation. Many breeders find it more practical to export specific records (like genetic test results or whelping plans) as PDFs to share with vets rather than giving system access. Full veterinary integration is available if you use our Veterinary Practice module.

How do you handle AI breedings with frozen or chilled semen?

The breeding method field includes options for natural breeding, artificial insemination, surgical AI, fresh chilled semen, and frozen semen. You document the method used, breeding dates, and can note specific details (like the repro vet who performed surgical AI or the collection date for frozen semen). Progesterone testing is especially important for AI breedings, and the system helps you track optimal timing.

Can I track transported semen for stud service?

Yes, through the breeding booking system. You can document special instructions for semen collection and shipping. For your own breedings using transported semen, you track the breeding event normally and note shipping/collection details in the breeding notes. The system doesn't specifically track shipping logistics (tracking numbers, etc.), but you can record all relevant information in the notes fields.

What if I use embryo transfer? Can you track recipient dams?

Embryo transfer is supported as a breeding method. You'd record the genetic dam and sire on the breeding event, then note the recipient dam in breeding notes. The litter would be linked to the genetic parents for pedigree purposes, but you could track the recipient dam's role in whelping notes. Full surrogate dam tracking is on the roadmap for future releases.

How do I track puppies I keep back for evaluation?

Mark offspring as "retained" instead of "sold." They remain in your offspring records with all their health, training, and development information. Once they mature and you decide whether to add them to your breeding program, you can change their status to "active breeding animal" or "pet" and update accordingly. Many breeders keep detailed temperament and conformation notes on retained puppies during evaluation periods.

Can I export data for breed club reports or surveys?

You can export all data to Excel/CSV format. Many breed clubs require annual reports (number of litters, offspring placed, health testing stats). You can filter your data (for example, all litters in a calendar year) and export for reporting. The format may need adjustment for specific club requirements, but having all data in one system makes reporting much easier than gathering from multiple sources.

What if I'm a first-time breeder with my first litter?

The system is designed to be comprehensive but not overwhelming. Start with the basics—set up your breeding program, enter your breeding animals and their pedigrees, track the heat cycle and breeding, then manage the pregnancy and whelping. You don't need to use every feature immediately. Many breeders gradually adopt advanced features (like genetic testing tracking or competition records) as they gain experience.

Do you support rare breeds or breeds not recognized by major registries?

Yes! The system doesn't have breed-specific validation—you can enter any breed name. Registry fields allow you to note your registry (AKC, UKC, CKC, FCI, breed-specific registries, or none). Pedigree generation, health tracking, and all other features work identically regardless of breed or recognition status. The system serves preservation breeders of rare breeds just as well as major-breed breeders.

Can I track linebreeding strategies or breeding plans for future generations?

You can document genetic priorities and breeding plans in your breeding program philosophy. When building pedigrees, the common ancestor detection feature identifies where linebreeding occurs (like breeding granddaughter back to grandfather). The COI calculation helps you evaluate different breeding pair options before committing. Many breeders use spreadsheet exports to model "what if" breeding scenarios, but in-system breeding plan modeling is on our roadmap.

What happens to my data if I stop breeding or close my program?

Your data is always yours. You can export everything—all animals, pedigrees, litters, offspring, health tests, competitions—at any time in standard formats. If you stop breeding, you can keep your account active in read-only mode for historical reference or close it and keep the exports. Many breeders maintain accounts even after retirement to track offspring they've placed and provide information to new owners.

How often do you add new features? Can I request specific features?

We release updates monthly with improvements and bug fixes. Major features are released quarterly. Our development roadmap is influenced heavily by breeder feedback—if multiple breeders request a feature, it gets prioritized. You can submit feature requests through our support system. The breeding module itself was built based on extensive feedback from professional breeders across multiple breeds.

Can I see a demo before committing?

Absolutely! Contact us to schedule a personalized demo where we'll walk through the features most relevant to your breeding program. We can show you heat cycle tracking, litter management, pedigree generation, genetic testing workflows, and answer questions specific to your breed or situation. Demos typically last 30-45 minutes and can be scheduled within 1-2 business days.

Is there a mobile app so I can update records from the whelping box?

A dedicated mobile app is currently in development. Right now, the web interface is mobile-responsive, so you can access everything from your phone or tablet's browser. Many breeders use tablets in their whelping rooms to record birth weights and details in real-time. The upcoming native app will provide a better mobile experience with offline capabilities for when you're away from WiFi.

What kind of customer support do you offer?

We offer email support during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 AM - 6 PM EST) with typical response times under 4 hours. We provide comprehensive video tutorials covering every feature, plus written documentation. For complex questions or setup help, we can schedule screen-share sessions. Most breeding-specific questions are answered quickly because our support team includes people familiar with breeding practices.

Do you offer discounts for breed clubs or breeder referral programs?

We offer volume discounts for breeding clubs or cooperatives where multiple breeders join together. We also have a referral program—when you refer another breeder who becomes a customer, you both receive account credits. Contact us for details about breeder network pricing or breed club partnerships.
